Tina Gao's Chow

Even though Valentine's Day was 2 weeks ago, my mind is constantly in a LOVE state of mind...especially when it comes to good food!  To me, it doesn't matter if you're single or coupled up when February 14th rolls around every year.  The warm feelings that surround this special day ought to be shared and felt EVERY day.  It could be love for your significant other, your friend, your pet, or your favorite hobbies!  And of course, bonding over food with those you love is always a fun time.

For Valentine's Day this year, my boss Morgan asked me if I would like to join her and her husband Steve for dinner that evening.  My first reaction was hesitation, because I thought I would be a third wheel!  However, Morgan is always the reassuring one and told me right away that the two of them don't typically do anything too grand for Valentine's Day and that it would be fun for us to all hang out.  And I'm so glad we did, because we sure had so much fun!

There's a wonderful Japanese restaurant in Quincy called Taiyou Shabu & Sushi.  What's wonderful about this place is the variety it offers.  Not only can you devour your favorite sushi here, but you can also try a delectable Japanese hot pot meal known as shabu.  An interesting factoid about the word "shabu" is that it translates to "swish," the noise the meat makes as it's swirled through hot broth with chopsticks.

For sushi, we shared a summer tuna roll, Philly roll, shrimp tempura roll, scallop roll and mango shrimp roll.  Yummy!  This variety made our tummies very content!  We also shared delicious hot pot, surf n' turf style, so equal parts meat and seafood with fresh udon noodles.  And of course, what's a meal without a few adult beverages?  Our feast was complemented by warm sake and Sapporo.  Toward the end of our meal, our sake was getting a bit cool, so Steve came up with the genius idea of putting the sake jar in our hot pot!  Problem solved :)

I hope your Valentine's Day was delicious and remember to celebrate each day with LOVE and chowlicious food!

Tina
