Got Sunscreen?

We all love the sun, but too much of it can have consequences. I remember a few years back when Shonda Schilling, wife of baseball great Curt Schilling, was one of our Exceptional Women. At our awards luncheon, Shonda told her story of being diagnosed with stage two malignant melanoma and having to undergo invasive surgeries to remove skin cancer from her back, arms, legs and chest. She urged the audience to keep an eye on our skin and see a dermatologist. That was a number of years ago. Just last year, someone close to me discovered melanoma on her arm, and had it removed. Luckily, the melanoma was caught early. I say all this now, because I finally decided to take a trip to the dermatologist and have a full checkup. I grew up spending summers on the beach at the cape, and suffering through many a sunburn. These days, now that we know the dangers of the sun, I always wear sunscreen, but back then, not so much. Recently I noticed an area on my hand that didn't look right, so I pointed it out to the doctor. That area turned out to be abnormal and needed to be removed. The good thing is, all the bad cells were on the surface of the skin and hadn't penetrated deeper. I'm very lucky. Early detection made the difference. Who knows, if I had waited longer, what the prognosis might have been? I share this with the hope that you will take a look at your skin, and if need be, make an appointment with a dermatologist. And by all means wear sunscreen! It's one of the best things you could do for yourself!

Nancy, this is not a comment to this post particularly, but more to your blog in general. I just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your posts and your take on things. You seem to have a wonderful perspective and I always enjoy your take on things. Cheers!
