The Case Of The Mysterious Acorns
Posted 10/25/2010 6:04:00 PM
Have you noted lately that there’s an enormous supply of acorns on the ground? I find myself not only crushing them underfoot, but occasionally slipping on them in the driveway. The squirrels can certainly knock them out of the oak trees, but when it comes to picking them up, they’re a bit lax in their job. The other day, I came home to find a small pile of these acorns in my family room. I thought, " What now? Are the squirrels moving in?" I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but our dog, Penzi, loves to bark and chase after squirrels. Thankfully, she has never caught any of these small critters, whose job it is to drive her crazy. Yesterday, I noticed that she was fussing and trying to get something out of her mouth. Upon inspection, I found that she had gotten an acorn shell caught between her teeth. After I dislodged it, she ran into the family room and began sniffing at the door. I opened it and out she ran… grabbing another acorn in her mouth. She came back in and set it with her pile of huge acorns. It turns out that she has been collecting them from outside and bringing them inside to savor and enjoy later. Apparently, she, too, is gearing up for the winter. Who would have thought? The Penzinator is a cairn terrier with a desire to be a squirrel-dog! I’m just wondering what mysterious things your dog has done?
