Flying Through The Air..

Speaking as someone with all the graceful agility of an ill pigeon caught in a windstorm, I was more than impressed after attending the dress rehearsal last weekend for the Boston Ballet’s new production of ‘Ultimate Balanchine.’ The program brings to the Opera House’s stage the late Russian ballet legend George Balanchine’s timeless choreography. I am always astounded by how easy dancers make it look by effortlessly executing terrific feats of physical stamina and beauty. The only give away that it might be a bit trickier than it looks was the continual beads of sweat dripping off of them and the blistered, bruised feet that emerged from point shoes at the end of the performance. The Four Temperaments was my favorite piece; comprised of four variations that are most amusingly named ‘Melancholic’, ‘Sanguinic’, ‘Phlegmatic’ and ‘Choleric’. Although the dancers made it look so seamless and easy that I was almost convinced I could try it at home, I suspect I may end up choleric myself if I’m not careful. I recommend we leave it to the trained professionals and simply sit back and enjoy the show this weekend. Go to the Morning Magic page to check out lovely Sarah Wroth and me at the rehearsal….she’s the one in the TUTU !
