The legendary Ruby Dee has died at the age of 91.

CNN reports that the actress, best known for her role of Ruth in “A Raisin in the Sun” both on the stage and on film, passed away at her New York home on Wednesday.

The actress also had roles in projects as varied as “The Jackie Robinson Story,” “Peyton Place” and the telefilm adaptation of the late Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” in 1979.

That last project was not a fluke for Dee, who along with her deceased husband, Ossie Davis, was a civil rights pioneer in her personal life as well as her professional one.

Her most recent roles include “American Gangster,” for which she scored an Oscar nod in her role as Mama Lucas, the mother of Denzel Washington’s character.
