Naomi Watts is returning to blockbuster films by signing on to star in the next three films in the “Divergent” series.
According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” Watts will play the leader of the Factionless – the group of people left to fend for themselves after failing to acclimate to one of the dystopian society’s five factions.
The role of Evelyn will carry over from “Insurgent,” which is shooting now, into the adaptation of the final book, “Allegiant,” which will be split into two movies.
The casting is slightly surprising, since Watts has primarily focused on indie fare recently, including roles in “The Impossible” and “Adore.”
“Insurgent,” coming out on March 20, 2015, also sees the introduction of Octavia Spencer and Bradley Cooper’s girlfriend, model Suki Waterhouse.
Fans of the “Divergent” might be interested – or mildly weirded out – to see on-screen siblings Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort play a couple in “The Fault in Our Stars,” which opens this Friday.
Both stars will be back for “Insurgent,” along with Theo James, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet, Maggie Q and Zoe Kravitz.
