Get ready to live in a Barbie world.
According to “Entertainment Weekly,” Sony Pictures is working with Mattel on a live-action comedy starring the iconic Barbie doll.
The untitled Barbie project is being written by Jenny Bicks (“Rio 2,” “What a Girl Wants”) and is part of a planned “global franchise,” following her “through many of her more than 150 roles, not limited to but including mermaid, princess, and president.”
This is the week’s latest film project with a major branding tie-in, including a marshmallow Peeps movie and film based on Disney’s “It’s a Small World” ride.
Of course, there have been a number of direct-to-video animated Barbie films, aside from hundreds of variations on the popular children’s toy.
In a post-“Lego Movie” world, Barbie could find success on the big screen, as long as it doesn’t borrow too heavily from Lindsay Lohan and Tyra Banks’s doll-come-to-life classic “Life-Size.”
