Australia's 5 Seconds of Summer have electrified the U.S. charts with their EP "She Looks So Perfect," which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart last week.
The set is led by the single of the same name, and guitarist Michael Clifford tells us the quartet knew they had found its calling card as soon as it wrote the song:
"When we found 'She Looks So Perfect'...we'd been looking up 'til then to find the first single that we wanted to, like, open with and define us. And when we got 'She Looks So Perfect' we all felt like it was the right thing to do...Me and Ashton (Irwin) wrote it with a guy called Jake Sinclair. He came to us with the song lyric, the first line of the chorus which was like, 'In my American Apparel underwear.'
He was like, 'It's a little bit weird, but just go with it.' And we were like, 'Dude, that's really cool' and we kind of just elaborated from there and came out to be how it is now. When we first wrote it I actually didn't like the song at all. During the writing process I was like, 'I just don't like this song.' Then we got it back and I was, 'OK, I do like the song.' "
5 Seconds of Summer is currently on the road in North America, and they will also be joining One Direction, who they opened for last summer, for an arena and stadium tour that begins August 1 in Toronto. 5 Seconds' first full-length album is due out later this year.
