The ESPYs have been known to break into broader pop culture for their hosting choices, but the latest emcee comes a bit out of left field.

For the 22nd award ceremony, rapper Drake will take the stage to host the Excellence in Sports Performance event, following in the footsteps of “Mad Men” actor Jon Hamm from last year.

Drake confirmed the news on Twitter, sharing a two-panel photo riffing on his “Nothing Was the Same” album cover:

Other past ESPY hosts have included Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson, Seth Meyers and Justin Timberlake.

Drake has been in the news lately for his rumored relationship with Rihanna, with the lyrics on his new song “Days in the Eastbelieved to reference the pop superstar.

Though he does not exactly have a wealth of hosting experience, the rapper has guest hosted “Saturday Night Live” and has a lengthy acting resume, including “Degrassi” and a cameo in “Anchorman 2.”

The 2014 ESPYs ceremony will take place on Wednesday, July 16 at 9pm on ESPN.
