As one of the most successful singers of all time, it’s no surprise that Mariah Carey has become an international icon. The legendary Mimi celebrates her birthday today!
After finding work as a backing vocalist in New York post-high school, Mariah got her big break in a studio session for Brenda K. Starr, when Tommy Mottola received one of her mixtapes. Mottola was so enthralled that he immediately signed her to Columbia Records, where she produced her self-titled debut.
Mariah saw immediate commercial success and had four number one hits off the album, garnering two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. Her subsequent efforts continued to see mainstream success, with a number of singles topping the Hot 100.
In 1997, she released another successful album, “Butterfly,” along with a compilation album she dropped the following year.
Then in 1999 she made history as the only artist to have a no. 1 hit in every year of the ‘90s after debuting her “Rainbow” album. She also surpassed The Beatles by having spent the most consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
After lying low for a few years, Mariah returned to the top in 2005 with “The Emancipation of Mimi,” which went multi-platinum and earned her 3 Grammys. With the single “Touch My Body” reaching number one in 2008, Carey became just the second artist to ever have 18 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2008, she married Nick Cannon, and in 2011, the couple welcomed twins. After following up her smash hit “Merry Christmas” album in 2010, Mariah has been back on the studio for her forthcoming album, which features hits like “#Beautiful” and “You’re Mine (Eternal).”
Happy birthday, Mariah Carey! We can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next!
