Paula Deen is on the road to reputation recovery, but she might have already started off on the wrong foot.

Speaking to “People” about her recent struggles with the press, the celebrity chef is facing further scrutiny for comparing herself to openly gay football star Michael Sam.

“I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my anme. It’s like that black football player who recently came out,” she told the magazine (via “The Wrap”). “He said. ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

Deen added that she’s “fighting to get my name back,” beginning with a new company, Paula Deen Ventures.

The star faced a great deal of public criticism and was let go from the Food Network after it was revealed that she had used a racial slur in the past while answering questions in a harassment suit.

According to “The Wrap,” she is meeting with various TV networks and stores to possibly partner with, though the Food Network is reportedly not on the short list.
