British Olympian Tom Daley took the plunge this week by opening up about his personal life.
In a five-minute Youtube video titled “Something I want to say,” the 19-year-old diving star came out as bisexual, speaking out about his relationship with his boyfriend.
“In spring this year my life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” he explained. “That someone is a guy.”
Daley added in the video, which already has more than 5 million hits, “Of course, I still fancy girls, but right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier.”
The athlete opened up about his family, saying that his immediate family was supportive, though he did receive some “mixed opinions” about announcing the news this way.
At the start of the video, he said his decision was sparked by an article in which he was misquoted.
“I didn’t want to get my words twisted,” he later says of decision to release the video. “I wanted to put an end to all the rumors and speculation, and just say it and tell you guys. It’s what I want to do.”
Daley won a bronze medal in diving during the 2012 Olympic Games in London and plans to compete again in 2016.
