The highly-anticipated adaptation of “The Giver” has been given an official release date.

According to Cinema Blend, the film, based on the classic novel of the same name by Lois Lowry, will hit theaters on August 15, 2014.

“The Giver” stars Brenton Thwaites (“Blue Lagoon: The Awakening”) as Jonas, a boy who lives in a society in which all “emotion, history and even color has been purged from the world, and when boys [and] girls come of age they are assigned their lot in life.”

While it sounds a great deal like “The Hunger Games” or “Divergent” from that description, the novel is less of an action story and more about the character’s internal journey.

Jonas is given the title of Receiver of Memory, meaning he is the only member of his generation who will experience color and emotion.

His new mentor, known as The Giver, will be played by Jeff Bridges, while Meryl Streep will star as the Chief Elder, as well as Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood”) as Jonas’s father.
