And the winner is… Miss New York!
Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America last night, making her the first woman of Indian descent to hold the title.
According to “Us Weekly,” Davuluri, 24, performed a Bollywood number for the performance competition and answering a question on plastic surgery during the Q&A segment.
Addressing Julie Chen’s confession on “The Talk” last week that she had plastic surgery on her eyes to appear “less Asian” and further her career.
“I don’t agree with plastic surgery, however I can understand that from a standpoint,” she said. “More importantly, I’ve always viewed Miss America as the girl next door. And Miss America is always evolving… I wouldn’t change someone’s looks. Be confident in who you are.”
The crowning did not come without some controversy, with a flurry of negative comments coming in based on Davuluri’s race, “The Guardian” reports.
The newly-crowned Miss America responded to the comments, saying, “I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
