With all the crazy moments that went down on Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, it’s hard to pick just five top moments. Yet from much-anticipated reunions to twerking teddy bears, here are the biggest moments from this year’s VMAs:
1. Best Live Performance
Lady Gaga opened the show with a typically-odd performance of her new single, “Applause.” Beginning with the close-up on her face surrounded by a giant square of white cardboard, it was clear that Gaga is back in action. From there, she made a number of strange outfit changes, switching up her black leotard and shower cap look with a number of wigs and dresses before throwing it all off for a clamshell bra. While it was by no means a normal performance for she pop star, anyone who had seen her new video knew what to expect. Still, say what you will about Lady Gaga, she definitely has the pipes to back it up.

2. Biggest Upset
Though it came as no surprise to anyone watching the vote count that One Direction would take home the Moonman for a brand new category, Best Song of Summer, for the aptly-titled “Best Song Ever,” the audience seemed in genuine shock. There was booing from the crowd as the boy banders taking the stage after beating out “song of summer” shoo-ins Daft Punk with “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke with “Blurred Lines.” Even though the song was only released last week, you can’t really argue with their fans’ 8.6 million votes.

3. Best “Unconfirmed” Appearance
When it was revealed that Justin Timberlake was winning Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, rumors instantly began flying about an *NSYNC reunion at the VMAs. Then the boy band took on an official twitter, posting Friday, “Mic check, mic check one.. two… is this thing on?” But the reunion was over before it began, a medley swallowed up in a lengthy performance by the band’s shining star, JT. One highlight of the performance was that the guys clearly remembered their old choreography, but this tease only had their fans screaming “I Want You Back.”

4. Best Surprise Appearance (TIE)
There were several genuinely surprising appearances during Sunday’s VMAs, but “Saturday Night Live” star Vanessa Bayer introducing Miley Cyrus while in character as the “Hannah Montana” star herself was, like, awesome. Another great moment was when “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson stepped out to sing on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s marriage equality anthem, “Same Love.” Like JT, JHud has spent the last several years devoted to her successful acting career, but it was great to see her back in action, showing off the pipes that made her famous.

5. Most Bizzare Performance You might assume this honor would easily fall into the hands of Lady Gaga, but there’s no arguing that Miley Cyrus takes the top spot for strangest performance with “We Can’t Stop.” With its mix of stuck-out tongues, twerking and giant teddy bears, Miley had this one in the bag, even before stripping down to a nude bikini like one of the girls from Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” video for a duet of his summer jam. The video is below, but remember, you’ve been warned:
