The Naomi Watts-starring “Diana” will debut in the U.S. this fall, but the star herself says it almost didn’t happen.
According to E! News, Watts recently told the U.K.’s “Sunday Times” that she was so unsure about taking on the role of the iconic Princess of Wales that she actually said no to the role.
“I turned it down twice,” she told the “Times.” “I was a little bit torn, but once I’d said no, I wasn’t completely at peace. Sometimes when you say no, you feel free, but it wasn’t the case.”
The star added that her concerns only grew after a run-in with Diana’s son, Prince William. Though she successfully avoided eye contact, she was quite concerned about how William and his brother Harry would feel about it.
“I do care deeply about how the princes feel, of course. I am a mum of two boys,” Watts said. “But it was a story that was bound to be told at some point, and it’s possibly fresher than people expected.”
“Diana” just received an official U.S. release, hitting limited theaters beginning on November 1.
