Peter Rabbit Film Accused Of 'Food Bullying' As Rabbits Pelt Allergic Man With Blackberries

The new film adaptation of the much-loved classic has prompted a furious backlash and calls for it to be withdrawn from cinemas because the protagonist and his furry friends deliberately pelt an allergic man with blackberries. In Peter Rabbit, starring James Corden, the rabbits’ arch nemesis Mr McGregor dies and his nephew Tom takes charge of the vegetable patch with a renewed disdain for them. In one scene, the rabbits, who have already learned that he is allergic to blackberries, pelt him with the fruit, firing one into his mouth. Tom reportedly collapses to the ground, choking and turning red before stabbing himself in the leg with an EpiPen. The rabbits are also said to make light of the seriousness of food allergies and suggest they are “made up for attention.” Global Anaphylaxis Awareness and Inclusivity (Globalaai), an Australian organization, has created a petition asking Sony Pictures to apologize. …

……In an emailed statement on Sunday, the filmmakers and Sony Pictures apologized: “Food allergies are a serious issue. Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s archnemesis, McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way.” The statement, which was attributed in part to the film’s director, writers and producers, added, “We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize.”
